For Men
- When gentlemen meet other gentlemen they remove their hats
- If one man is higher in rank than the other the lower-rank one bows slightly (30 degrees or less)
- If they're equal in rank, a slight nod is acceptable but not necessary
- Men who are close may greet each other with a hug
- When a man meets a lady he should bow
- If the woman is higher in rank than him (e.g. the Queen) he may kneel with his hat off and his head bowed, or bow deeply with his hat off
- After a brief conversation with a Lady on the street at gentleman should bow and then raise his hat.
For Women
- When women are introduced to women a slight inclination of the body, a smile, and an appropriate remark are proper
- If a lady passes a female friend she should acknowledge her with slight bow and smile, a kiss is also permitted
- Women who are close may kiss each other on the cheek
Walking
When walking more than two abreast, linking arms is appropriate. Women of a higher rank may rest their hands on top of a gentleman's arm. Holding hands would not happen in this period. When walking, it is also completely appropriate for people to walk side by side without linking arms; this signals that they are new acquaintances or not in a romantic pairing.
