Porthos, named Isaac de Portau, came from the town of Pau and from newly noble stock. He was descended from a kitchen steward who apparently impressed Henri IV and was made a lord. The family owned the chateau of Lanne-en-Baretous, where it seems Isaac was born. Isaac was baptized Catholic on the 17th of February in 1617, which gives us some indication as to his birthdate.
By 1642, Isaac was in Paris serving in the guard regiment of des Essarts, Troisville's brother-in-law. There is no indication that he was a Musketeer- no muster rolls list his name. He didn't stay in Paris long. Abound 1650, he returned to his home reigon of Béarn and held the position of subaltern (a subordinate position to a Captain or Lieutenant) of the guard of munitions in Navarrenx. After that, history loses track of him. There is no record of marriage or death.
Porthos was Dumas' favorite character, and he imbued Porthos with many of his own qualities as well as qualities attributed to Dumas' father, whom Dumas revered.
